Spring is around the corner. In less than a month, on March 20, 2026, we will hit the spring equinox in the Northern Hemisphere. Although, this date is more about day and night being equal in length of time, we as Northerners are excited to “feel” the warmth. With warmer weather comes less clothes such as shorts, sundresses, and bathing suits. During this time is when I personally begin to get my body ready for Swimwear, —"Very Nice” (only those who remember the Wendy’s commercial will laugh at that). As I begin eating leaner, exercising more, increasing my water intake, and toning my “gone south” parts, I see the extra winter “fluff” shed off.
Holding on to the concept of shedding pounds, as believers we are to strip off the negative feelings of hate. To explain, recently, I was studying Galatians when I read a comment about “clothe yourself in Christ” (3:27). Since, we know Christ is Love, and we have the Holy Spirit living in us, we can choose to clothe ourselves with His Love. Thus, making the steps towards shedding off the unwanted rags of “hate.”
Here are practical ways to dress in Love while tossing off clothes of Hate:
First, Feed on God’s word for spiritual nutrition. Chew on Scripture. Reading the Bible is important but chewing slowly and savoring what you are reading last longer than just inhaling it.
Second, Drink in His Living Water. The Holy Spirit dwells inside of us. Thus, when we talk/pray and rely on His spring of Living water it quenches our daily thirst. It hydrates us so we do not become dry, bitter, or hardened.
Third, Exercise to strengthen those spiritual muscles. This requires “Action”-by doing Love. Help others, be a friend, and give recklessly. The Bible says the best way to avoid evil is to flee and do good (Psalms 37:27).
Fourth, Rest. This seems counterintuitive because we are working to lose the weight of hate; however, we know God worked hard for 6 days to build the Heavens, Earth, and everything in them. Afterwards, He rested on day 7 (Genesis 2:2). Rest is good. Even athletes who train for several days in a row will have at least one day of rest. For example, when I was training for a marathon, my schedule had two rest days built in it. God values rest because it prepares us to be strong and ready to continue with the enduring walk of Love.
It is not easy to love the unlovable or pray for someone who hurt you. God does not ask how we feel, but He does asks us to trust Him. Believe me, I am speaking to myself. I have had some hard punches lately and was knocked down; however, I am determined to remain in Him and get back up in obedience. Therefore, it is my choice to honor the One Who loves me, forgives me, offers mercy, and extends grace. By releasing the “hate” I have felt, I am spiritually fit and swimming in a Suit of Christ. 😉
